Palworld Passive Skills Guide — Best Passives and How to Get Them
Passive skills in Palworld are the difference between a good Pal and a great one. A Jetragon with Legend + Ferocious hits roughly 60% harder than one without any passives. Understanding which passives are worth breeding for — and how to stack them — is the core of late-game optimisation.
Top combat passives (ranked by tier)
Legend (Rank 4) is the best single passive in the game: +20% Attack, +20% Defense, +20% speed simultaneously. Only obtainable through breeding — no Pal has it innately. Start by catching Pals with Rank 3 passives and work up.
Ferocious (Rank 3): +20% Attack. The top pure-damage passive and the most commonly targeted for damage builds.
Swift (Rank 3): +30% movement speed. Important for combat manoeuvring and useful on mounts.
Musclehead (Rank 3): +30% Attack but −50% Work Speed. Great for pure combat Pals kept out of your base.
Aggressive (Rank 2): +10% Attack. A tier-2 pickup that fits well in a 4-passive build after Legend/Ferocious.
Artisan (Rank 3): +50% Work Speed. The top work passive — essential on your base crafting Pals (especially Anubis with Handiwork 4).
How passive inheritance works in breeding
Each parent has up to 4 passive slots. When breeding, the child inherits a random selection from the combined pool of both parents' passives, typically getting 2–3 of them. There's also a chance for a random non-parent passive to appear in one slot.
To target a specific passive combination, use parents that both have those passives innately. The more overlap between parents' passives and your target list, the higher your per-attempt odds.
Multi-generation breeding: build a 'passive carrier' Pal over 2–3 generations that accumulates your target passives, then breed it into your final target species.
Each passive detail page shows which Pals have it innately — use those as your breeding starters. The 'Filter Paldeck →' button on each passive page shows all innate carriers at once.
Best passives for base Pals
Artisan (+50% Work Speed) is the clear #1 for base workers. An Anubis with Artisan crafts items at nearly 1.5× the base rate — transforming a 10-minute craft into under 7 minutes.
Serious (Rank 2): +20% Work Speed, a strong secondary passive.
Workaholic (Rank 1): −15% Sanity decrease rate. Keeps your base Pals working longer before they need rest.
Combine Artisan + Serious + Workaholic on your Anubis for the most productive base worker in the game.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best passive skill in Palworld?
Legend is the best overall passive: +20% Attack, +20% Defense, and +20% speed in one slot. It's not innate on any Pal and must be obtained through breeding. For pure damage, Ferocious (+20% Attack) and Musclehead (+30% Attack) are the top picks.
How do I get the Legend passive in Palworld?
Legend cannot be found innately on any Pal — it only appears through breeding RNG. The most efficient route is to accumulate Rank 3 passives (Ferocious, Swift) through multi-generation breeding and let Legend appear in empty passive slots.
How many passives can a Pal have?
Each Pal has up to 4 passive slots. You cannot exceed 4 passives on a single Pal regardless of breeding. Some Pals spawn with 0–2 innate passives and the rest are empty.
What's the best passive for base workers?
Artisan (+50% Work Speed) is the single best work passive. Stack it with Serious (+20% Work Speed) for near-maximum crafting efficiency.
